Apparently when one googles “tumblr” and “rape” this post I wrote about being raped is one of the first things that pops up. Yay, analytics!
This is particularly awesome right now, as many people are discussing a woman’s tumblr post about rape jokes and Daniel Tosh. Let the googling commence!
I’m not going to get into my thoughts on Tosh, because Meghan already wrote them out. Read it. She’s right. Daniel Tosh isn’t insulting because rape jokes can’t be funny, Daniel Tosh is insulting because his jokes on the subject just aren’t funny. Unfunny joke are, by nature — and especially around sensitive subjects — are just insulting. To all of us.
What I am going to say, is that if tumblr has become the kind of place where my really open and honest discussion about being raped is making me a target of rape threats (currently up to 32 anon notes offering to “get me properly”), then this is not a community of which I want to be a member.
This is not an “I quit the Internet” post. This is a “hey humanity (you are still human, yes?), look at your life, look at your choices” post. This is a “look at how you are treating other people” post. This is a “I think your parents would be super disappointed in you post.” This is a “what you think is funny is not at all funny post.”
This is an, “you are an asshole” post.
I haven’t been super active on the Internet lately because it can tend to freak me out, but if this platform that I used to love has become nothing more than a breeder of hate, then maybe it’s okay if the zombie apocalypse comes and we all end up becoming rotting, brainless corpses. Because that’s not all that far from where we are now.
