ellegolightly asked: What are your festive Hannukah plans? Are you pro-NYE or anti-NYE? What are your plans for that, the biggest letdown of all the holidays? (I just gave away my camp, clearly.)
thesoundofonebrainthinking asked: If price and logistics weren't an issue, where would you like to go for a month-long vacation. (Yes, Mars would be an acceptable answer) Bonus points for answering in iambic pentameter.
shaba asked: I apologize for sounding super uninformed, but I tried to look for this information for about 14 seconds before I gave up. I'm confused. I watched the first season of Downton Abbey on Netflix and I thought season 2 started in January. What's this about a Christmas special?
umcanyounot asked: Who would you rather be best friends with: Michelle Obama or Beyonce?
indianaminute asked: Which famous would you invite to a dinner party? What would you serve? What would you wear?!?
Anonymous asked: Blue, green or red?
bmichael asked: So you're a Whovian, right. I was wondering, like, is it worth ceasing viewing relations with the show because of its undeniable stinkiness? Should I watch the X-mas special? It's so ugh. Anyway, that's not really a question. I'll still watch it. Here's a question: was Christopher Eccleston charismatic? Follow-up: was Christopher Eccleston handsome?
laurenzee asked: What's your favorite YA book? If it's a series, what's your favorite in the series?
hadassah-means-esther asked: could you take a picture of what was in your birchbox this month? i'm thinking about getting a subscription but i want to see it if it's worth it, first. :)
mclobstah asked: Joy, it's 4 am in the middle of finals week, and I just finished reading Divergent. I blame you! But also, thank you! It was just the right distraction I needed to get my brain off of biostatistics and epidemiology. And as soon as I finish exams, I'm reading Hunger Games! Also, I saw your post looking for books, and I really liked Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. Also, The...

Anonymous asked: I can't believe you're trying to make "The Perfect Chanukkah Meal", and you aren't making kugel. I don't see this ending well for you. Kugel is a Chanukkah-must!
On Hanukkah, New Relationships and Managing Stress
Tonight I am making a Hanukkah diner for Gentleman Caller (that’s right, I’m dating a Jewish-Armenian doctor. Don’t say I don’t do things for you, all of my female relatives!). Normally I’d approach this with a cool sense of calm. I might not know how to do a lot of things, but I can make a mean latke.
That is, until, I learned that all of Gentleman Caller’s...

Today, in ways to help me out →
This morning, we launched a project I’ve been working on for about three months. It’s a multi-staged project, with the first stage giving you the opportunity to take a pledge not to text and drive. When you take this pledge or join this group, money is generated for the National Organizations for Youth Safety.
The project itself represents the first time a corporation is creating a...
In a new study, one-third of American women said... →
The cycle of violence towards women in this country is an epidemic. This recent study, which might be shocking to some, really shouldn’t come as any surprise. Take a look at television programs, read a men’s magazine, talk to younger boys about their opinions on women, or turn on a “news” program to see how female political candidates are treated.
Our patriarchal and...
On Kindles and the Economy and Reading and Comfort
“As much as I despise some of its recent tactics, no company in recent years has done more than Amazon to ignite a national passion for buying, reading, and even writing new books.”
There’s a really interesting article on Slate today about what Amazon has done for reading, really an attack on Richard Russo’s widely Tumblr-ized piece yesterday.
While I agree with Russo...

tinsely:
Dear Romney,
Meet Google.
And then introduce him to all your friends.
And then use Google to your heart’s desire. Encourage your friends to do so, as well. (Google won’t mind, I promise.)
I’d bet ya $10,000 it will help.
Pippa Middleton and Barbara Walters
There is no way the royal family is letting Pippa go on the show. No way.
I mean, we’ve never heard the woman speak. We don’t know what her voice sounds like. And there is just no fathomable way that the Royal Institution is going to let that first interview be with an American newscaster.
My prediction is this is being sold as an interview, but it’s really going to be Barbara...

peacelovewine replied to your post: Vacation
Have you read “Divergent” yet? I highly recommend that one. Also “D Sarah’s Key”.
Um, guys, I introduced the Internet to Divergent. Don’t forget that.
Vacation
I didn’t take much vacation this year.
In fact, I took so little vacation that I’m now just three weeks away from the end of the year and still have six vacation days to my name.
So I’m doing it, I’m going on vacation.
The week between Chrimukkah and New Years, I will be in beautiful Annisquam, Massachusetts relaxing with some of my dearest friends.
My agenda? To read....
